  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup colorful bonbons or candy-coated chocolates like M&M’s or similar
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon rainbow sprinkles for extra fun inside or on top

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls (medium and large)
  • Electric mixer or hand whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • 8-inch (20 cm) round cake pans (2)
  • Cooling rack
  • Spatula
  • Sifter (for flour and powdered sugar)
  • Oven mitts
  • Toothpick or cake tester

Method

Step 1: Bake the Cake
  1. Prepare a cake using a box mix or your favorite homemade recipe.
  2. Bake it as directed.
  3. Let the cake cool completely before using.
Step 2: Crumble the Cake
  1. Break the cooled cake into fine crumbs using your hands or a fork.
  2. Make sure there are no large chunks.
Step 3: Add Frosting
  1. Add about 1 cup of frosting (any flavor you like).
  2. Mix it with the cake crumbs until the mixture holds together like dough.
Step 4: Roll into Balls
  1. Scoop out a tablespoon of the mixture.
  2. Roll into smooth, even balls using your hands.
  3. Place them on a parchment-lined tray.
Step 5: Chill the Balls
  1. Put the tray in the freezer for 20–30 minutes to firm up the balls.
  2. This helps keep their shape during dipping.
Step 6: Melt Chocolate
  1. Melt chocolate chips or candy melts in the microwave (30-second intervals).
  2. Stir until smooth.
  3. Add 1 tbsp coconut oil if you want a thinner coating.
Step 7: Dip the Bon Bons
  1. Use a fork or skewer to dip each chilled ball into melted chocolate.
  2. Tap off the excess and place on parchment paper.
  3. Decorate with sprinkles, nuts, or drizzle if desired.
Step 8: Let Them Set
  1. Let the bon bons sit at room temperature or refrigerate for 10–15 minutes.
  2. Once the coating hardens, they’re ready to enjoy!

Notes

Make sure the cake is completely cool before coating it in chocolate to avoid melting or crumbling. If you’re using candy melts, add a bit of coconut oil for a smoother dipping consistency.
For the best flavor, chill the bon bon cakes overnight—this helps the flavors settle and makes dipping easier. You can also freeze the shaped cakes before coating to keep their structure firm.
