Ingredients

  • 3 medium russet or Idaho potatoes
  • Unsalted butter for topping
  • Shredded cheese e.g., cheddar
  • Sour cream optional
  • Baked beans optional

Equipment

  • Oven
  • Baking tray
  • Fork
  • Knife
  • Mixing bowls
  • Spoon or masher (for mashing, if needed)

Method

Preheat the Oven
  1. Set your oven to 400°F (200°C).
Prepare the Potatoes
  1. Wash and scrub the potatoes thoroughly to remove any dirt. Prick them a few times with a fork to allow steam to escape during baking.
Bake the Potatoes
  1. Place the potatoes directly on the oven rack or on a baking tray. Bake for 45-60 minutes, or until they are soft when pierced with a fork.
Cool Slightly
  1. Remove the potatoes from the oven and let them rest for about 10 minutes to cool slightly.
Add Toppings
  1. Slice open each potato and fluff the insides with a fork. Add your desired toppings such as butter, shredded cheese, sour cream, or baked beans.
Serve
  1. For younger children, you can mash the potato flesh with butter to achieve a smoother texture that’s easier for them to eat.

Notes

When I make potato recipes for kids, I always keep the textures soft, flavors mild, and ingredients simple. I avoid spicy seasonings and go for comforting add-ins like cheese, butter, or a touch of herbs. Finger foods work best—kids love things they can pick up easily. I also try to use minimal oil and bake instead of fry when possible. Whether I’m making mashed potato patties or baked wedges, I focus on making each bite fun, wholesome, and easy to eat.
