About CookClear
CookClear exists for the moment you are standing in the kitchen with a question and a recipe that does not answer it. How long does this need? What can I use instead? Is this still safe to eat?
Every page on the site starts with the answer. You get it in the Clear Answer box at the top, in two or three sentences, before anything else. The rest of the page is there for when you want the why, the exceptions, or a fix for something that already went wrong.
What we cover
We focus on the questions home cooks search for most, sorted into five areas:
- Cooking Times: how long, how hot, and how to tell when food is done.
- Substitutes: what works in place of a missing ingredient, and how much to use.
- Food Storage: how long food keeps, where it belongs, and when to let it go.
- Kitchen Tools: what is worth buying and how to get the most from it.
- Techniques: why a dish went wrong and what to change next time.
How we answer
Numbers matter in a kitchen, so we check them. Safe internal temperatures, fridge and freezer windows, and thawing times come from the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, FoodSafety.gov and the FDA. Cooking and baking details are checked against university extension programs, established test kitchens and manufacturer instructions. When a figure cannot be confirmed, we say so plainly or leave it out.
We write the way an experienced home cook would explain something to a friend: short sentences, real measurements, and no padding to stretch a simple answer.
Photos and videos
Photos come from free licensed libraries such as Unsplash, Pexels and Wikimedia Commons, with the photographer credited under each image. Each page also includes one short video from an established cooking channel, picked because seeing a technique often helps more than reading about it. We add our own notes on what to watch for, and the channel is always credited.
Keeping answers current
Food safety guidance changes from time to time, and so do our pages. We revisit answers when new guidance comes out or when readers point out something we can explain better.
